What cars can be imported?

The procedure for motor vehicles for private use varies based on two types of automobiles: those that are less than twenty-five years old and those that are not, but have a historical significance and can enter the country with limitations to circulate, for purposes of exhibition.

Vehicle models that are made or sold in the United States are much easier to import. Well, there is already a guarantee that they are fit to circulate in this country.

Foreigners of Mexican nationality who enter this nation for a visit or who are residents can enter their car from Mexico and drive it for a period of up to one year, without further formalities and exempt from paying duties. However, they will not be able to sell it in the United States.

Cost

Whoever wants to import a foreign automobile must pay, in addition to the cost of hiring the importing company, a percentage fee on the purchase or sale value of the car. These are, for automobiles, 2.5%, trucks 25% and, for motorcycles, it can be free or 2.4%.

U.S. citizens and legal residents may request an exemption from payment of up to eight hundred dollars (US$800) for their personal vehicle or that of their accompanying family members if:

He brings it back.
Import the car for personal use.
He acquired it during the trip from which he returns.
Military and civilian employees of the United States government shall be exempt from duty.

Entry and registration

Presented the documentation at the border and made the payments, you will be able to enter the country. Immediately proceed to insure the car.
